No wonder that in the modern age, jewelry has gained such an important status in the global market and a nation’s fortune is decided upon its possession and utilization of gold and diamond mines.

Competition among the best brands is at its optimum level and today’s jewelers are the busiest in the professional market, trying to meet the never-ending craving for priceless elegant designs. With the revolution in the area of industry and communication, world class jewelry has come to the reach of urban man and is no longer limited to remain in the prized possession of royalty and film stars. No matter what the budget, jewelry, in today’s world comes in many different forms to suit your individual style. Every variety of jewelry has long since been the ultimate fashion statement and has stayed that way till date. The earlier small scale family jewelry shops have turned into massive corporate giants spewing thousands of fresh designs each year. This was founded in 1924 by Meyer M. Gordon. With further expansion, the business grew into a dominant regional jewelry brand catering to local fashion and style and it has continued the tradition over the years.

Bailey Banks & Biddle:

This was created by two American silversmiths with very little capital in 1832 and the brand was established in 1878. This firm of fine jewelers became one of the country’s prominent jewelry brands and now has a nationwide recognition. Bailey Banks & Biddle has grown to more than 70 retail locations in 31 states across the country and Puerto Rico.

Piercing Pagoda:

Bvlgari

Since 1884, Bulgari has been setting the pace for Italian style in jewellery. It was founded by a Greek named Sotirio who had a flair for roman culture. With a high volume of creativity and innovation, Bulgari looks for inspiration from Greek and Roman arts without losing focus on originality. It experiments with gold jewelry in strings of pearl and colored stones. This gives a unique colorful touch to its products. Primarily situated in prime uptown locations or shopping malls, the stores operate under the banners “H.Samuel”, “Ernest Jones” and “Leslie Davis” (a trade name related to Ernest Jones). Signet sells gold, silver, diamond, and gemstone jewelry, watches, collectibles, and gifts. Some stores sell china and crystal.

Zale Corporation has captured the Canadian market through two brands, Peoples® Jewellers and Mappins® Fine Jewellers. Both chains are well-known throughout Canada. They provide traditional jewelry items through outlets located in prime malls and other strategically well-placed geographic locations. Founded in 1919 as a family business, Peoples Jewellers was the first company in Canada to sell jewelry on a time payment plan. How to Buy Vintage Jewelry at Thrift Shops

Some of the best places to find great vintage costume jewelry are thrift shops. You’ve seen the big stores – Goodwill, Salvation Army, Savers…and then there are the charity shops run by churches and non-profits. All of them receive donated jewelry, and I have found some amazing pieces in thrift shops. It seems to me that the larger chain shops have better prices than the smaller charity shops, but it really depends on who is pricing the jewelry when they put it out for sale. Some shop employees are very savvy about values, but some aren’t and they often price jewelry very low. Maybe they figure that if it isn’t real gold it isn’t worth much. Good for us!

Thrift shop shopping has lost the stigma of being just junk shops or places where the down-and-out shop.

A great tip is to become friendly with the staff of the shops that you visit. One clerk lets me rummage through the jewelry bins before she prices them and puts them out on the floor. Another lets me know when they get a large amount of jewelry donated.

Find out when the shop has their specials. One store in my town has a 30% Senior discount on Wednesdays. Guess which day is my shopping day!

Sometimes the shop management will put a large amount of jewelry in a plastic bag and sell the bag for a fixed price. If you find these, examine the bag as closely as you can – you won’t be allowed to open it, and there’s lots of junk in there, mostly stuff that didn’t sell, and often lots of plastic Mardi Gras beads. I bought these bags a few times, and it was fun sorting through everything, but I wound up donating most of it to a nursing home for crafts projects. I have found a few really nice pieces this way, but I don’t think it was really worth the time and trouble.

Most thrift shops have a glass case where they keep the better stuff. Ask to see pieces that interest you, and examine them closely. Look closely at the racks where they usually hang the cheaper stuff. I found a sterling silver Native American belt buckle, with a turquoise stone in it and signed by the artist, hanging in a zip lock bag on a rack. I bought it for $2.80 and sold it on eBay for $52! It was badly tarnished, but I polished it up and it was beautiful.

There always seem to be lots of watches in those cases. Beware of copies of famous makes, and buy only name brands that you recognize. Make sure the band is in good condition and that there are no scratches on the crystal. The watch probably won’t be working, so plan to spend $5 to $7 for a battery. If you’re buying for resale, be sure to include the cost of a battery to see if the watch is worth buying. You’re taking a chance there – it might not work even after a new battery is installed.

Whether you are buying jewelry for your own collection or for resale, there are several things to look for when examining thrift shop jewelry.

1. Condition, condition, condition: You are going to come across all kinds of jewelry in all kinds of condition. Look for broken clasps, missing stones, worn metal finishes, and any green material on gold tone jewelry. The green stuff is corrosion, and it can’t be cleaned off. Pass on that one. Check that stone settings are tight, and if they aren’t, be careful with the piece – you should be able to tighten them. If the piece is dirty you can clean it. Bring a jeweler’s loupe or strong magnifying glass so you can examine the piece closely.

2. Is the piece signed? The name on the back of a pin or earring, on the clasp of a necklace or bracelet, or on an earring clip is the "signature" of the designer. Signed pieces can be more valuable than unsigned, but there are also many many "unsigned beauties" out there. Look for the name, and if there is a copyright symbol , that means the piece was made after about 1955. No symbol – you probably have a real vintage piece. Look for the numbers 925 on silver jewelry – that means it’s sterling silver, and if the price is right, you’ve got a steal.

3. Price: It’s hard to put a price on thrift shop jewelry – the cheaper, the better, of course! I try not to spend more than $3 for a pin, bracelet, necklace or pair of earrings. You might come across something really spectacular that costs more, and if you think you can profit from it, or you want it for yourself, go ahead and buy it. A good rule of thumb when shopping thrift shops is this: If you like it but aren’t sure, set yourself a limit, say $5. If it turns out to be not so great, you’re not out that much. As mentioned, some thrift shop employees know more about jewelry, and will price some pieces too high for you to sell and make a profit. But there seems to be quite a bit of employee turnover in these shops, so the next person pricing jewelry might not be as knowledgeable.

After Christmas is a good time to pick up Christmas jewelry. Some shops will mark down holiday items to get rid of them, other shops just store them away for next year.

I love shopping at thrift shops – just like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. Every trip is a treasure hunt. Some days are slim pickin’s, but some days are very rewarding. Just yesterday I got 10 pieces for $15 – several are sterling silver, and one piece may be jade – I’m still not sure.

Be consistent in your thrift shop shopping. Try to go out every week, and find out when the shops have their special promotions. Most of the large chain shops put out new merchandise all day long, some other shops restock on certain days. Find out when those are, and get there early.

Read books about costume jewelry, and become knowledgeable, so when you shop the thrift shops you’ll be armed with information. Have fun with it, get to know the thrift shop staff, and you’ll come home with some fabulous jewelry at fabulous prices.

In previous articles we have discuss the origins of jewelry. Let’s now take a look at jewelry and jewelry making during the time of the Middle Ages.

Even though the Ancient Roman Empire was decaying, many areas of their empire continued on with the refinement of their jewelry making skills and designs. In particular the cultures of the Merovingian (encompassing the areas around Ancient Gaul in France) and the Celts were known for their fine jewelry. The Celts often used continuous designs and patterns, while Merovingian jewelry often took the form of stylized animal figures. Some of the more common jewelry pieces were amulets, signet rings, and various fasteners of clothing. By the time the 8th century rolled around, men were utilizing jewels in their weapons.

The eastern parts of the collapsing Ancient Roman Empire continued with the jewelry making techniques and traditions of the Romans. Religious ideals and items predominated. Differing from the Romans, Franks and Celts (who used solid gold in their jewelry), the Byzantium used light-weight gold leaf…with emphasis being placed on the actual stones and gems themselves. Not for the normal "lay person", Byzantine jewelry was worn by females with money, while signet rings were the main form of jewelry for men. As was common with cultures of the time, people were buried with the jewelry they owned.

The Renaissance was a period of explosive knowledge in the arts and sciences, and the refinement of jewelry making during this time period was to be no exception. During the Renaissance the Europeans explored the far reaches of the world, and they uncovered a number of gemstones that make their way into their jewelry designs.

When Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in France, he restored the grandeur and style in the areas of fashion and jewelry. Take the cameo for example. Napoleon had one of these decorating his crown. Once this fashion trend was shown to the public, the demand for cameos rose. Costume jewelry was also starting to develop around this time. Depending on the materials the jewelers worked with, they were given specific names.

About the time of the late 18th century romanticism started to work it’s way into jewelry development of the area. The industrial processes of the time meant that cheaper alloys and stone substitutes were now available, and this resulted in more paste and costume jewelry.The start of the Industrial Revolution, and the subsequent social conditions that the people were being subjected to, resulted in the rise of a growing middle-class. This class of people wanted, and could now afford, jewelry.

In 1837 a man named Charles Lewis Tiffany started his jewelry company in the United States. It was to go on to develop some stunning jewelry, such as those created for the wife of President Abraham Lincoln. This company really put the United States on the map in the area of jewelry design and craftsmanship. It is this exact same company that was to become the setting of the Hollywood movie "Breakfast at Tiffany’s". On the other side "of the pond" as they say, in France in particular, Pierre Cartier founded his company, Cartier SA, in 1847. A few years later, in 1884, the Italian jewelry company of Bulgari was founded.
